Here are some fascinating facts about our neighbourhood.

Our Local area

The Farringdon has its roots in the twelfth century but in recent years has experienced a spectacular resurgence as one of London’s most fashionable places to live and work. This area is a new hub for foodies thanks to Smithfield meat market’s easy access to the freshest meat and produce in London.

Smithfield is not only the largest wholesale meat market in the United Kingdom, but the oldest too. In the Twelfth Century it was the play area of London, a place where jousting sand tournaments took place. Then it became the most famous livestock market in the country. In the Thirteen Century it was used as a place for execution for criminals.

For centuries our St John Street was the route for drovers and traders coming from the north through Islington to the markets in and around Smithfield. Later carriers and salespeople lodged at inns along St John Street, conducted their business there, stored goods in the yards and outbuildings, stabled horses and parked wagons.

The Priory Church of St Bartholomew The Great, a tiny church tucked away behind Smithfield, is a hidden star of our neighbourhood. It attracted many filmmakers, and you can see its beautiful interior in Shakespeare in Love and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

We love this neighbourhood, and we wanted to create a restaurant we were proud of. We hope you enjoy sharing our passion!
